Taiwanese breakfast shops on your own

Breakfast shops are on almost every street corner in Taipei, and they are one of the easiest places to eat alone. Most customers are on their own, grabbing something on the way to work or school. You sit down, eat in ten minutes and pay well under NT$150.
Two kinds of breakfast shop
- Western-style breakfast shops (早餐店). Bright counters with a griddle at the front. They sell toast sandwiches, burgers, egg pancakes, radish cake, fried noodles and sweet milk tea. This is the most common kind.
- Soy milk shops (豆漿店). The older, Chinese-style breakfast: hot or cold soy milk, fried dough sticks, flaky sesame flatbread and sticky rice rolls. Some open before dawn.
Both kinds work the same way for one person: everything is sold by the single item, so you can order one thing or three.
How to order
- Look for a paper order sheet and a pen on the counter or the tables. If there is no sheet, order at the counter instead.
- Write the number you want next to each item, usually a "1". The sheet is in Chinese, so compare it with the menu board, use a translation app or point at a photo.
- Mark dine-in or takeaway if the sheet asks: 內用 means eating here, 外帶 means to go.
- Hand the sheet to the counter. Some shops take payment now; at others you pay on the way out. Take a seat and the food comes to you.
- Pay in cash. Small shops rarely take cards. Keep coins and NT$100 notes handy.
Solo tip: Order one hot item and one drink. A pancake or sandwich plus milk tea is a full breakfast for most people, usually NT$60–120.
What to order
- Egg pancake (蛋餅, dàn bǐng). A soft crepe rolled around a fried egg, often with cheese, ham, corn or tuna added. The classic first try.
- Radish cake (蘿蔔糕). Pan-fried slices of savory radish cake, often with an egg on top.
- Iron-plate noodles (鐵板麵). Thick noodles with black pepper or mushroom sauce, served on a hot plate. Good if you want something filling.
- Toast sandwich (三明治). Soft white bread with egg, ham and a sweet mayonnaise. Mild, safe and easy to point at.
- Milk tea (奶茶). Sweet black tea with milk, hot or iced. It comes already sweetened.
- At a soy milk shop: sweet soy milk (豆漿) with a fried dough stick (油條), or a sticky rice roll (飯糰). Salty soy milk (鹹豆漿) is a savory, slightly curdled soup, not a drink.
Good to know
- Breakfast shops close early. Most open around 06:00–07:00 and close between 11:00 and 13:30. Many take one day off a week, often Sunday.
- Sauces are on the table. Look for a bottle of chili sauce and a thick sweet soy paste for pancakes and radish cake.
- Drinks are sweet by default. If you want it less sweet, it may be easier to order soy milk or black tea and taste first.
- Shared tables are normal at busy times. Just sit where there is space.
- Vegetarian? Soy milk shops are easier: plain soy milk, flatbread and egg pancakes without meat are common. Ask about lard if you are strict.
