How to visit, step by step

  1. Start at Yongle Market (No. 21, Sec. 1, Dihua Street), about 10-15 minutes on foot from Beimen (G13). Upstairs floors are a big fabric market
  2. Walk north along Dihua Street Sec. 1 and look up at the old shophouse fronts between the tea, herb and dried-goods shops
  3. Stop at Xiahai City God Temple (No. 61), open daily 07:00-19:00. Looking around is free and offerings are optional
  4. At Minsheng West Road, detour to Sin Hong Choon Tea Museum (No. 309), a 1934 tea merchant's house open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00-18:00. Check any entry fee at the door
  5. Keep heading west on Minsheng West Road to its end for Dadaocheng Wharf and the sunset
  6. In shops, staff may speak little English. Pointing at items and showing a number on your phone works fine
Don't miss: Xiahai City God Temple and the stretch of restored shophouses between Yongle Market and Minsheng West Road.
Best time to go alone: A weekday afternoon from about 14:00, ending at the wharf around sunset. The weeks before Lunar New Year are packed.
