Shilin Night Market

士林觀光夜市 · show this name to taxi drivers

Taipei's biggest and best-known night market, spread through the streets around Shilin Market a few minutes from Jiantan MRT. Most snacks come in single portions you can eat as you walk, and the air-conditioned food court under the market hall and a few sit-down shops give you somewhere to sit on your own. It is crowded, touristy and pricier than smaller markets.

How to order, step by step

  1. Leave Jiantan Station by Exit 1 and cross the road - the south end of the market starts there
  2. Walk up Jihe Road to the Shilin Market building, then into the lanes around Danan Road, Dadong Road and Cixian Temple
  3. Order one item at a time - single portions are normal and you can point at the photos or the price board
  4. Sit down in the food court under the market building (escalators down from the covered area) or at shops with their own tables
  5. Bring cash in small notes - many stalls take cash only
  6. At fruit stalls, check the posted price and ask for the total before anything is cut
  7. Do not sit and eat on the steps of Cixian Temple
What to order solo: Herbal pork rib soup at Hai You (海友十全排骨, Dadong Rd. No. 49, closed Tuesdays), an oyster omelette at the sit-down shop Zhong Cheng Hao (忠誠號, Dadong Rd. No. 15-32), and two pan-fried buns from Chung Chia (鍾家原上海生煎包, Xiaodong St. No. 38, closed Wednesdays and shut by 20:00 most days).
Best time to go alone: Around 17:00-18:30 on a weekday, when most stalls are open but before the 19:00-22:00 crowds. Weekend evenings are packed.
