Xiangshan (Elephant Mountain) Hiking Trail
象山親山步道 · show this name to taxi drivers
Taipei's most popular short hike: a steep stone stairway up the hill next to Taipei 101, ending at big boulders with a classic view of the tower and the city. It is free, open all day and busy with walkers, so going alone is completely normal. Until about April 2027 parts of the trail are being rebuilt, so expect some detours.

How to visit, step by step
- Take the MRT to Xiangshan (R02), Exit 2, and walk about 10 minutes through Xiangshan Park to the trailhead next to Lingyun Temple
- The trail is almost all stone steps. Allow about 15 minutes up to the Photographers' Platform area and about 25 minutes to the Six Giant Rocks
- Until about April 2027 the city is improving the trailhead, the Photographers' Platform and the paths around the Six Giant Rocks. Some sections are closed, so follow the detour signs and never cross the work fences
- The city expects the new Photographers' Platform to open by the end of December 2026. Until then the main viewing deck may be fenced off, and you may have to wait your turn for photo spots on the rocks
- Bring water and wear shoes with grip. The steps are steep and get slippery after rain
- Guides say the main trail has lights after dark, but carry a phone torch in case the works change the route
Don't miss: The view of Taipei 101 and the city from the rocks near the top, ideally around sunset.
Best time to go alone: Early morning on a weekday for quiet steps, or arrive 30-45 minutes before sunset. Sunset and New Year's Eve are by far the busiest times.
