Pingxi Old Street

平溪老街 · show this name to taxi drivers

A quieter, more local old street than Shifen, on a slope beneath the Pingxi Line, where trains cross an elevated track right above the street. Walk it for a grilled sausage and a cup of mian cha, and find Taiwan's oldest round post box outside the post office.

How to visit, step by step

  1. From Pingxi Station, walk off the end of the platform into the old street
  2. Wait under the elevated track for a train to pass overhead
  3. Find the round cast-iron post box from 1941 in front of Pingxi Post Office, the oldest of its kind in Taiwan
  4. Snack along the way: Railway Hot Sausage at No. 18 (closed Mondays) and the mian cha shop at No. 35 (closed Wednesdays and Thursdays)
  5. Lanterns are sold here too. Release one only where the official release-zone signs allow, between 06:00 and 22:00, and never on the tracks
  6. The trail to the Eight Immortals Cave next to Guanyinyan Temple was closed for repairs as of October 2026
Don't miss: A train crossing overhead, the 1941 post box and a grilled sausage.
Best time to go alone: A weekend, from late morning to mid-afternoon, when most stalls are open. On weekdays many shops are closed.
