Shifen Waterfall Park

十分瀑布公園 · show this name to taxi drivers

Often called Taiwan's largest curtain-shaped waterfall, it is free to visit and has viewing platforms close to the falls. The approach from the Shifen Visitor Center is an easy 400 m path without stairs, so it pairs well with Shifen Old Street on a solo day trip.

How to visit, step by step

  1. Take bus 795 to its last stop at the Shifen Visitor Center, or walk about 20-30 minutes from Shifen Old Street. The visitor center has public toilets
  2. From the visitor center, follow the Shifen Friendly Trail, about 400 m of gentle ramps (about 15 min), to the park entrance. A step-free path covers the last stretch
  3. Entry is free. From October to May, arrive by 16:30, the last entry time
  4. Walk to the viewing platforms in front of the falls. By the Sihguangtan suspension bridge, look for the potholes in the riverbed and the small Yanjingdong (Spectacles Cave) Waterfall
  5. Stay on the paths and out of the water. The pool below the falls is deep
  6. The park closes for typhoons and heavy rain. After bad weather, check New Taipei's tourism website before you go
Don't miss: The main curtain of water from the front viewing platforms, plus the potholes and the little Yanjingdong Waterfall by the suspension bridge.
Best time to go alone: A weekday morning soon after 09:00, before tour groups crowd the platforms. The falls are fuller after rain.
