Nanmen Fuzhou Dry Noodles

南門福州傻瓜乾麵 · show this name to taxi drivers

A small Fuzhou-style dry noodle shop in a lane next to Nanmen Market. The noodles arrive plain and you season them yourself at the table, so a bowl with a fish ball soup is a cheap, quick meal for one.

How to order, step by step

  1. Check you are at Lane 59, No. 32 on Nanchang Road - this is not the similarly named Xiaonanmen shop on Yanping South Road
  2. Order a small or large bowl of dry noodles, and a soup or the red-yeast pork chop rice if you are hungry
  3. Tell staff if you want it not spicy, a little spicy or spicy
  4. Season the noodles yourself with the vinegar, chili and sauces on the table - a board on the wall shows the steps
  5. Pay in cash (ask whether to pay first)
  6. There is no toilet
What to order solo: A small bowl of dry noodles (NT$30 in 2023, so expect a little more now) with a fish ball soup. For a fuller meal, the fried red-yeast pork chop rice was NT$70 in 2023.
Best time to go alone: Weekday late morning before 11:45, or after 13:30. Closed Sundays.
