Taipei Tianhou Temple

臺北天后宮 · show this name to taxi drivers

A Mazu (sea goddess) temple tucked between shops on Chengdu Road in Ximending, with roots going back to 1746. It stands on the site of a Japanese Shingon Buddhist temple, and a statue of the Japanese monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai) is still worshipped in a side hall. It is free, small and an easy 15-minute stop.

How to visit, step by step

  1. Look for the narrow gateway between shopfronts on Chengdu Road, at the southern edge of the Ximending pedestrian area
  2. Walk in freely. No ticket or booking is needed
  3. Locals start their prayers upstairs at the Jade Emperor hall, then come back down. Follow the flow and keep out of their way
  4. Find the Kobo Daishi statue in a side hall on the ground floor
  5. Keep your voice low and skip the flash near the altars
Don't miss: The Kobo Daishi statue, a rare link to Japan inside a Taiwanese temple, and the quiet halls hidden behind busy shopfronts.
Best time to go alone: Daytime or early evening. It is a short stop, so fit it in while you explore Ximending.
