4F Theater Cafe (Zhongshan Hall)

4F劇場咖啡 · show this name to taxi drivers

A cafe on the fourth floor of Zhongshan Hall, the 1936 public hall a short walk from Ximen Station. Red sofas, wooden tables and tall arched windows give it an old-theater feel, most seats have power outlets, and there is no set time limit. It is one of the calmest places near Ximending to sit alone with a drink, a slice of cake or a laptop.

How to order, step by step

  1. Go into Zhongshan Hall at No. 98 Yanping South Road. There is no lift from the ground floor, so take the stairs to the 2nd floor, walk to the far end and take the lift to the 4th floor
  2. Turn right out of the lift to find the cafe
  3. Order and pay at the counter, then take your table number to a seat. Bring cash
  4. Expect a minimum spend of about NT$250 per person, so one drink alone may not be enough
  5. Stay as long as you like. When the cafe is full or the hall has an event, staff may ask you to limit your time
  6. Toilets are on another floor, so ask staff for directions
What to order solo: A drink with a cake such as tiramisu or Basque cheesecake is the easiest way to reach the minimum. A 6-inch pizza (NT$220 in 2025) works as a light meal. Check the posted price.
Best time to go alone: Weekday afternoons are quietest. Weekends get busy, so arrive near opening if you want a seat with an outlet.
