Tamsui Old Street & Riverside Promenade

淡水老街・河岸步道 · show this name to taxi drivers

Tamsui's classic walk: the old street of snack shops on Zhongzheng Road runs beside a riverside promenade of more than a kilometer, with Guanyin Mountain across the water. Local snacks such as a-gei, fish ball soup and iron eggs are sold one portion or one pack at a time, so it is easy to graze on your own, and the river glows around sunset.

How to visit, step by step

  1. Take the MRT Red Line to Tamsui, the last stop. Only about every second train goes all the way, so check the destination before you board
  2. From the station, follow the path to the riverside and walk along the promenade, with the old street running parallel on Zhongzheng Road
  3. Graze as you go. Most snack shops sell single portions, and many take cash only
  4. Keep walking to Tamsui Ferry Pier for boats to Bali or Fisherman's Wharf
  5. Riverside paths can close in typhoons or strong wind
Don't miss: Sunset over the river, with a-gei, fish ball soup or a bag of iron eggs (a Tamsui specialty) picked up along the way.
Best time to go alone: A weekday late afternoon into sunset. Weekend afternoons are the most crowded.
