Maokong Zhangshu (Camphor Tree) Trail

貓空樟樹步道 · show this name to taxi drivers

A gentle walk through Maokong's tea fields that starts across the road from the gondola's top station. It drops past terraced tea bushes to a small pond, with seasonal flowers along the way, and can be stretched into a longer loop toward Zhangshan Temple. How to visit, step by step

  1. Ride the Maokong Gondola to Maokong Station at the top
  2. Cross the main road and look for the small road heading downhill near the cat statue, signed for the Zhangshu (Camphor Tree) Trail
  3. Walk a few minutes down through the tea fields to a small pond, then climb back the same way, or carry on along the trail
  4. For a longer walk, follow signs toward Zhangshan Temple. The Maokong Right Line bus loops from Maokong Station past the trail's north and south entrances, Zhangshan Temple and the Zhanghu Trail, so you can ride back instead of climbing
  5. Stay on the main trail and don't cut across farm paths or tea fields
  6. Go in daylight and bring water and an umbrella. Mist and rain are common, and the steps get slippery
Don't miss: The view over rows of tea bushes from the lower part of the trail, plus whatever seasonal flowers are out.
Best time to go alone: A weekday morning or early afternoon, leaving time to get back to the station before dark.
