Taipei Zoo
臺北市立動物園 · show this name to taxi drivers
Taiwan's largest zoo, at the end of the brown MRT line, with giant pandas, koalas, penguins and pangolins spread across a big hillside park. A regular ticket is NT$100 and you wander at your own pace, which makes it an easy half day alone. The Maokong Gondola starts nearby.

How to visit, step by step
- Take the MRT Wenhu (brown) line to Taipei Zoo Station (BR01) and walk to the main gate
- Buy a regular ticket (NT$100) at the entrance before 16:00. Online sales are suspended, and the NT$60 and NT$50 tickets are only for Taipei residents and holders of discount ID
- Leave bags in the lockers beside the Visitor Center on the entrance plaza (large NT$60, small NT$40, for 3 hours)
- The park is big and hilly. A shuttle train (NT$5) runs along the main route, or you can walk
- Indoor houses take turns closing on Mondays: the Giant Panda House on the first Monday of the month, the Tropical Rainforest Indoor House and Penguin House on the second, the Amphibian and Reptile House on the third and the Insect House on the fourth
- There are about 17 places to eat inside, including Baiwei House (beef noodles, rice dishes and dumplings) at Hippo Plaza, a bento shop by the exit and the Panda Restaurant upstairs in the Giant Panda House. The zoo's list says they take cash, cards and EasyCard. Disposable tableware is not used for eating in
- To leave and come back the same day, get a hand stamp at the exit
Don't miss: Start with the Giant Panda House, then the koalas, and finish with the penguins and pangolins in the indoor houses.
Best time to go alone: A weekday morning soon after 09:00. Weekends and school holidays are busy, and summer afternoons are hot.
